Backing Up and Restoring Projects

You can make backups of projects to guard against data loss. To do so, choose Project → Back Up. The Project Backup Description dialog box opens, in which you can enter a short description of the backup. This description can be used to identify the backup if a project has to be restored from backup. When you click OK, the backup commences. The backup is stored in a directory that is in the same location as the project, named project.backup. The backup is stored in this directory zip format and is named with the time stamp, YYYY.MM.DD-HH.MM.SS.prjzip. You can specify an alternate location in the Preferences panel, under Project – Backups.

To restore a project from a backup, choose Restore from Backup from the Project menu. The Restore Project from Backup dialog box opens, and presents a table of backups with the backup time and description listed. Select the backup you want to restore, and click OK. The backup that you restore overwrites the current project, so if you want to keep data from the current project you should export it first.

You must have the project open to restore a backup: the backup mechanism is inteneded for checkpointing a project and reverting to a previous state. In this regard it provides more flexibility than the Save State facility, which only allows a single version to be stored. However, any backups will be used in the event that the project is corrupted and must be recovered.

Preferences for the number of backups, notification of success of a backup, and performing automatic backups can be set under Project – Backups in the Preferences panel.
