Atom Labels Panel

Summary

This panel is used to compose labels and assign them to atoms. Options for customizing the label appearance are available in the Preferences panel.

Opening the Atom Labels Panel

To open the Atom Labels panel, you can:

This panel is dockable, so it opens by default in the Workspace. You can change this behavior in the Preferences panel, under General – Panels.

Using the Atom Labels Panel

To create a label you need to choose the fields (properties) that will be displayed in the label. The default fields are listed in the Fields list. To add a field to the list, click Add, and select the fields you want to use from the lists in the dialog box that opens. The fields are displayed in the order that they appear in the list. You can drag the fields to the desired position in the list. If you want to remove fields, select them in the list and click Remove. You can hide fields in the label by clearing the check box for the field. In this way you can keep a set of commonly used fields in the Fields list but choose which of these are actually displayed in the label by using the check boxes.

Labels can be added to selected atoms by picking, and they can also be removed by picking. Existing labels can be replaced. You can choose what effect picking atoms will have from the Pick to option menu. Once you have decided on this action, you can use the standard picking tools in the Label atoms section to pick the atoms.

You can update all existing labels with the new composition by clicking Update Existing Labels. This is a shortcut for picking all atoms that have labels.

To remove individual labels, choose Clear labels from the Pick to option menu, and pick the labels in the Workspace, or right-click on the labels and choose Delete. To remove all the labels, click Clear All Labels, or choose Labels from the Delete button menu on the Edit toolbar.

You can change the position of an atom label by dragging the label to the new position. To restore the label to its default position, right-click on it and choose Reset Position. To restore all labels to their default positions, choose Reset Positions from the Pick to Label button menu on the Labels toolbar.

The formatting of the atom labels is set up in the Preferences panel, under Atom/Bond labels. The formatting includes the field separator, names of the fields, font, color, and default position.Applying fog to labels is controlled from the Fog tab of the Appearance panel.

Composition section

In this section, you can choose the content of the atom labels. The label can be composed from atom properties, entry properties, or text that you enter by using the User Text button on the Labels toolbar in the main window.

Fields list

Lists the fields to include in the atom labels, in the order shown. You can select multiple fields in the list, and drag them to reposition them in the list, or click Remove to remove them from the list. Each field has a check box that indicates whether it is included in the label or not. When a new field is added, it is added to the end and automatically included in the label. The User text field is an atom property that can be added or removed from the list like any other property.

Add button

Add fields to the Fields list. Opens the Add Label Fields dialog box, in which you can select atom properties and entry properties, and add text that you enter. When you click OK in the dialog box, the fields are listed in the Fields list.

Remove button

Remove the selected fields from the Fields list.

Remove All button

Remove all fields from the Fields list.

Pick to option menu

This option menu controls the action taken when picking atoms for labeling. The options are:

Label atoms picking controls

Use the standard picking tools to select the atoms to be labeled or the atoms from which to remove labels. The action taken depends on the option selected from the Pick to option menu.

Update Existing Labels button

This button applies new label content and settings to all currently labeled atoms, including settings made in the Preferences panel such as color and position.

Label Preferences button

This button opens the Preferences panel at the Atom labels tab, so you can set the label font, field separator, color, position, and set labeling options.

Clear All Labels button

This button removes all atom labels. You can also remove labels from the Label All, Pick to Label, and Delete toolbar button menus.
