Color Schemes Panel

Summary

In this panel you can view the descriptions of color schemes; create, delete, and edit color schemes; and import and export color schemes.

Opening the Color Schemes Panel

To open the Color Schemes panel, you can:

Using the Color Schemes Panel

A color scheme is a set of rules that describes how atoms are to be colored. This panel provides the tools for managing color schemes. The standard schemes are listed in the Color Schemes topic.

To examine or edit a color scheme, first select it in the color schemes list. The list is synchronized with the Color scheme option menu in the Atom Color tab of the Atom and Bond Coloring panel, so the scheme you chose in that panel is the default selection in the color scheme list. A brief description of the scheme is given in the Description text area. To view the details of the color definitons and to change them, click Edit, which opens the Edit Color Scheme dialog box.

To create a new scheme based on an atom-level property, click New. In the New Color Scheme dialog box, you can select the property, set minimum and maximum values of the property, and assign colors from a color ramp to evenly-spaced ranges of property colors. Once the scheme is set up, you can edit the colors and ranges in the Edit Color Scheme dialog box.

To create a new scheme from an existing scheme (rather than edit the existing scheme), select the scheme and click Copy. A new scheme is added to the end of the list, with a suffix added to the name. You can then edit it as described above.

You can also customize color schemes manually—see Customizing Color Schemes by Editing Resource Files.

Color Schemes Panel Features

List of schemes

Maestro has a variety of standard color schemes, and you can add your own color schemes. All schemes, standard and custom, are listed in the list of schemes.

You can select a single row in the list of schemes, and the name and description are displayed below. You can drag this row to a new location in the list, and you can apply an action to the row with one of the buttons Edit, Copy, or Delete.

For a list of standard schemes and their descriptions, see the Color Schemes topic.

Editing buttons

The buttons to the right of the list can be used to edit, store, or load color schemes, which are stored in text files.

When you make any changes to the color scheme, or add color schemes, the changes are stored in your user resources area (see Customizing Color Schemes by Editing Resource Files).

Edit button

Edit the selected color scheme (standard or custom). Opens the Edit Color Scheme dialog box.

New button

Add a new color scheme based on an atom property. Opens the New Color Scheme dialog box.

Copy button

Make a copy of an existing color scheme, which can then be edited as a custom scheme. The copy is added to the end of the list, and the name has an index number appended. You can edit the name when you edit the scheme.

Delete button

Delete the selected scheme, after confirmation. This button is only available when you select a custom scheme.

Import button

Import a color scheme from a file (.sch). The imported scheme is added to the end of the list, and the name is made unique if necessary. Opens a file selector, so you can navigate to and select the file.

Export button

Export a color scheme to a file (.sch). Opens a file selector, so you can navigate to a location and name the file.

Reset All button

Remove all custom color schemes and revert the standard schemes to those in the installation (Maestro resources directory). This action must be confirmed in the dialog that is displayed, as it cannot be undone.

Custom color option menu

This option menu is present only for color schemes that include a custom color. You can choose the custom color from a range of named colors.

Color scheme text box

Displays the name of the selected color scheme.

Description text area
